Wednesday: Dirt and Soil and lots of Toil.

The wheelbarrow had been defeated just in time for this: an insanely huge pile of soil. Notice the use of the word "soil." This is an entirely different substance than "dirt," which was previously all I had ever had any interaction with. The dirt I am well acquainted with should be called "rocks-with-cement-like-substance-to-glue-rocks-together." It is all but impossible to shovel, throws dust into the air like nothing else (it's been windy, too), and spreads everywhere. The soil that arrived on our driveway on Wednesday morning allowed penetration of a shovel with ease and cascaded delicately into a mound when dumped. I wasn't sure how to respond to the soil, so my sister and I headed into the back yard to deal with the dirt some more.
We filled in trenches most of the day while the wind blew the dust in our faces. This lovely picture is of me crammed in a corner, holding a sprinkler head in place in the most awkward position available while Julie is pouring dirt on me. I had lots of dirt in my teeth and eyes throughout the day and for the few days following. Mom, Julie and I worked in the morning and Mom helped with the kids while Julie and I carried on for most of the day. Thanks Mom and Julie!!

This is what the back yard looked like on Wednesday.

Work. I believe this was the night that you had to go get "one more part" for the sprinklers and I looked at you and said "right now?!?" in an exasperated voice. Good day to make a comment on the "lazy excuse for a husband," honey!!
